Sixteen-year-old Caitlyn Foster never believed in the legend of the Redeemers. That was before the trees started to whisper her name. Before a murder of crows attacked the town. Before she and her family came home to find a bloody handprint on their front door, marking one of them as a sacrifice. As Caitlyn’s friends are ripped from their homes, she knows it’s only a matter of time before the Redeemers come for her. Caitlyn has the power to stop the terror, but she’ll have to decide if she’s willing to sacrifice herself to save those she loves.

What was your inspiration for this book?  Was it another book?  A movie?

Inspiration for FIngers in the Mist came from a few different places. I’d have to say the seed was planted about ten years ago. I was sitting at home with one of my roommates, and we were talking about the rapture of all things. He was a religion major, and we’d often have some very interesting discussions. He told me how a certain religion (I don’t remember which) believes the rapture will take the good or “the worthy” to heaven, throw the world into total chaos and leave “the unworthy” to deal with the aftermath. When I asked what the aftermath would be, he said this same group of people believed that the world would be covered in a foggy darkness and those left behind would only be safe in their homes. The darkness would last for seven days and seven nights and all modern conveniences like running water and electricity wouldn’t work. To make things worse, if anyone is to step outside their home during this time, they would be ravaged by monsters. These same monsters would roam the streets, knocking on doors, trying to lure these poor people from their homes by tempting them with those vices that prevented them from being saved in the first place. I immediately put myself in this situation and realized how screwed I would be. I rarely keep my fridge and pantry stocked, so if I got left behind in the rapture (and let’s face it, I’m no saint, I would definitely be left behind) I’d probably get really hungry after a few days. If one of the rapture monsters knocked on my door offering me a big, greasy cheeseburger and fries, I’m going to open the door. Poor, dead me!

Flash forward a few more years. It’s around 4:30 AM (I get up very early to go to work) and I’m outside waiting for my dog to do her business. It always takes her forever, and as I’m waiting for her to do her thing, I notice how quiet and still it is outside. I live in a suburb of Houston, and while it’s not as noisy or busy as the city, it still has its fair share of noise. It was oddly quiet and still that particular morning, and a bit unsettling. I had noticed it was a little hazy when I stepped outside, but as I stood there, the fog started growing thicker and thicker and I immediately thought back to the story my friend had told me a few years before. Thanks to my overactive imagination, I started to panic a little. What if the rapture had happened, and the monsters were coming in the fog?

I gathered my courage, brought my dog inside and then braved the fog to get to work. I thought about my rapture monsters the entire way into the office. What if they were real? How would it all go down? What would I do if I was faced with some murderous entity out to get me?

I grew up in a very small town in southeastern Idaho. It’s a town where everyone leaves their doors unlocked and their keys in the car. It’s a place where everyone knows everyone (and usually everyone’s business). Not much ever happens there, but when it does, it’s big. I’d always wanted to write a book set in a place that seems quiet and safe on the surface, but is tainted by something dark and evil. A place where safety and peace comes with a price, and what is more priceless than the lives of friends and family? Someplace similar to my hometown would be the perfect setting for my fog monsters. Thus, the Redeemers and the sleepy, creepy little town of Highland Falls was born.

I hope you enjoy the book. Thanks for having me on the blog today!
