What is your motivation behind Courting Cassandry? Why did you want to write it?

Courting Cassandry is the second book in my Hearts in Autumn Romance series. The couples in this series are older than couples in most romances, in their 40s and 50s. Now that I’m, oh, somewhere around those ages myself, I thought it would be interesting to explore how romances might develop between more mature couples, all based on the premise: “You’re never too old to fall in love!” Because really, don’t we all want to be loved regardless of our age?

The Written Adventure - What is a Hearts in Autumn Romance?

These are characters who have already lived rich lives, who have experienced depths of heartache and joy that my younger characters only stand on the threshold of. That gives my autumn couples layers of complexity that I can’t quite reach with younger characters. And I am finding that aspect exceptionally enjoyable!

5. What inspired the idea for your Courting Cassandry or Hearts in Autumn Series?

A couple of years ago, a writers group I was in challenged us each to try to write an autumn-themed story. While I was trying to come up with an autumn theme, the thought came to me, “What if I wrote a story about falling in love during the characters’ ‘autumn years?’” So I wrote a romance about an older couple and enjoyed it so much, I decided to turn it into a series called “Hearts in Autumn.” Courting Cassandry is the second title in the series. (The first was Loving Lucianna.)

I wanted it to be as realistic a story as possible of what it might be like to die tragically and be trapped in the afterlife as a ghost. Let's face it, we all have to die and none of us can say with certainty what happens when we do. It's the biggest fear of the unknown there is! Oh, we may think we know, or may have certain beliefs about what might happen, but what if it doesn't happen that way? What if you are suddenly and unfairly taken from this life and now you're stuck and don't know why? How angry would you be? What would you do? How much would you begin to question all you've ever believed in? It won't be completely apparent until later in the series, but I wanted it to be a story of great hope for anyone who has tragically lost someone they love, especially someone young.

The setting for most of the story was inspired by The Angel of the Sea, an award-winning bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ. This spectacular inn has been featured on several television programs and in magazines throughout the world. Most notably, it was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as one of the "Best Vacations in the World" and included in her television talk show. The Angel of the Sea is one of the most recognized Victorian structures in the United States. Legend has it that in the late 1960’s, a girl did fall to her death at the Angel of the Sea and did at one time, haunt the inn. The story of the girl has been included in several non-fiction books about ghosts in Cape May. Sarah’s character in THE GHOST CHRONICLES was inspired by this legend. The Inspiration for Hope in Every Raindrop

It was early spring of 2007. I was on track to graduate from the University of Florida in a couple months, and already had a job lined up in Tampa. Yet, I found myself looking through a giant green book called, "The Dog Bible."

I had spent weeks studying breeds, and narrowed it down to a breed that I had never heard of: Carolina dog.

As luck would have it, there were two litters born around the first of the year. I called my mom and told her I was going to drive to Bishopville, South Carolina to see the litters. 

She was worried about what I'd do with a dog in my small apartment, and how I'd keep a puppy at home while I went to school, and eventually work. 

"It just isn't good timing," she said.

I told her, "Mom, it's never good timing."

A week later we were driving to Bishopville together. 

I fell in love with the dogs from the moment I saw them. 

Carolina Dogs

I knew there was something different about these dogs from the moment I saw them. The way they moved, the way they watched each step you took. They were lithe and graceful, fierce, and above all untrusting. 

Most people might raise an eyebrow here. Untrusting? How can that be good? But it is good. Trust is like respect, it must be earned. And I wanted to earn it.

The man who raised the dogs of a grizzly bear of a man. He walked the property, of over a thousand acres where he raised the dogs, with a giant staff. And he spoke of the dogs as if they were of legend.

He told me they would outswim a lab, had a stronger blood scent than any hound, and were more intelligent than a border collie. He told me they'd be the greatest watch dog, but the worst attack dog. And he also told me about several gentlemen from Alaska that traveled to South Carolina just for these dogs.

I'd like to see this alone was the inspiration for Hope In Every Raindrop. But unfortunately the story didn't end there.

Losing My Best Friend

I left Bishopville with a puppy I named Pace, and I spent every moment I could with her. She was one of the few things in life I did not take for granted.

So, when she escaped from a boarding facility when I went on vacation, I had a hard time accepting losing her. The gentleman that hit her expressed remorse, the boarding facility was full of sorrow, and the vet that couldn't save her was in tears.

It's hard to lose your best friend, and I still miss her daily. 

Several years later, in 2013, I started to Hope In Every Raindrop in honor of the greatest dog I've ever known.

Wesley Banks was born in 1983 and grew up on the west coast of Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering. After spending over 7 years building movable bridges from Florida to Washington he decided to focus on his true passion: writing.

Wesley recently moved from Florida to Oregon to get back to the great outdoors that he’s love so much. He lives with my wife Lindsey, and his two dogs Linkin and Story. Most of his time these days is spent writing, with as much rock climbing, hiking, or skiing as they can fit in.

Wesley’s debut novel, “Hope In Every Raindrop,” is set to be released May of 2015.
