Natalia Greyes is a resident of Dome 1618, a covered city protected from the deadly radiation that has poisoned the world outside for four generations. Is the cause of the radiation in the book? If not, what cause the world to be radiated?
In There Once Were Stars, no one has lived outside of Dome 1618 for four generations, due to the radiation on the outside. But where did this radiation come from, and why hasn’t anyone tried to go outside since?
In the novel, Nat briefly mentions the Cleansing Wars, but doesn’t go into much detail. We learn in the first two chapters that a virus broke out before there were domed cities, almost a century ago. Domes were built to house the immune, while the rest of the world succumbed to nuclear war, in an attempt to eradicate the virus.
In the first draft, I had a lot of focus on the Cleansing Wars, but realized it was so far removed from Nat’s present day that I cut most of it out. In truth, it still exists throughout the novel as a reflection of our fear of that which we cannot control, and how our fear can drive us to make inhumane choices.
And that is where the radiation comes from…though I can’t tell you what happens after Nat sees a boy on the outside who isn’t affected by the radiation her people still fear…
Whether it’s uncovering the corruption of the future, or traveling to other worlds to save the universe, Melanie McFarlane jumps in with both hands on her keyboard. Though she can be found obsessing over zombies and orcs from time to time, Melanie has focused her powers on her upcoming YA trilogy: THERE ONCE WERE STARS and her YA urban fantasy series: SUMMONER RISING.
